Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor

Posted Date: 10/11/24 (10:47 AM)

Ms. Nicolich's Earth Science students visited Cheviot Park on Wednesday to participate in A Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor. The program is held in early October each year, and is coordinated by The Hudson River Estuary Program of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and operated in partnership with the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

Schools from all over the Hudson and Lower Mohawk Valleys participated at 97 different sites.

Students measured weather conditions (exceptionally windy), turbidity, PH and dissolved oxygen, and caught and identified fish.

Volunteers from the DEC, Vassar College, Columbia Land Conservancy, and Roe Jan Watershed Community helped run the different stations. Funds raised during the last two Roe Jan Creek Boat Club canoe races made the field trip possible.
